Walking Route Overview:
Day 1: Chew Valley via The Edges (8 miles)
A challenging walk around the edges of the Chew Valley above the Dovestone area of the Peak District National Park with tremendous views throughout. Starting from The Tanners Mill Car Park the walk will begin with a steep and prolonged ascent to the trig point at the summit of Alphin Pike at 469 metres (1,538 ft). From here we will follow the undulating edges above the Chew Valley, passing over the top of Wimberry Rocks, known locally as "Indians Head”. A great spot for lunch (Weather permitting!) Onwards passing Wilderness Gullies to Chew Reservoir, which until 1971 this was the highest constructed reservoir in England. Continuing around the edges we will eventually descend from the Cairn at the Fox Stone to the Dovestone Reservoir area and back to the Clarence Pub.
Day 2: Pots ‘n' Pans (4.5miles)
From Grains Bar we will drive to the Cross Keys pub above the village of Uppermill, Saddleworth. We will walk a route that will take us to Running Hill Pits disused quarries, and from here we will cross open moorland to ‘trig point’ on Broadstone Hill. Onwards across the moor with tremendous views of the Saddleworth villages past Slades rocks and Shaw Rocks to Alderman Hill with arguably the best views of the Dovestone area and the wild moorland landscape of the Peak District National Park that lies beyond, a good place to rest for lunch on a nice day. Leaving Alderman Hill, we will travel across the moor to the War memorial obelisk at Pots n Pans, every year hundreds of people climb the steep ascent to pay their respects those who gave their lives during the world wars. You will now return to the walker friendly Cross Keys Pub via the Pob Green area.
